After 36 years at the helm of G Adventures, founder Bruce Poon Tip is rethinking what it means to lead a company — and why its future should belong to more than one person.
The Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist and bestselling author is preparing to release his latest book, Communityship: Lessons from the Universe and the Business of Everyone, on November 24, 2026.
Published by HarperCollins in Canada and the United States, the book features a foreword by the late Dr. Jane Goodall and introduces what Poon Tip describes as a new approach to leadership built around trust, shared responsibility, belonging and collective purpose.
Part memoir and part business guide, Communityship draws on Poon Tip’s experience transforming G Adventures from a start-up financed by two maxed-out credit cards into the world’s largest small-group adventure travel company.

But rather than focusing exclusively on the company’s success, the book tackles a more personal question: how can a founder build something that continues to thrive long after they’re gone?
“Communityship is about understanding that none of us succeeds alone,” said Poon Tip in a press release. “For 36 years, I thought my job was to build G Adventures. I eventually realised my job was to build something that could outlive me. That meant letting go of control, trusting other people and creating a community that felt responsible for the future of the business. The next 100 years of G Adventures cannot belong to one person. They have to belong to all of us.”
Moving beyond founder-led leadership
Throughout his career, Poon Tip has been closely associated with the identity and direction of G Adventures.
In Communityship, he examines the challenges of moving away from a founder-centric business model and allowing others to take greater ownership of the company’s future.
That transition, he acknowledges, hasn’t always been easy.

The book recounts moments when Poon Tip questioned his place in the organization he had spent decades building, including times when he felt there was “no seat on the bus” for him in its future.
Ultimately, he came to recognize that building a lasting legacy didn’t necessarily mean maintaining control.
Instead, he argues that traditional models of leadership, which often place a single individual at the centre of an organization, should evolve toward a more collaborative approach.
Under his concept of communityship, responsibility for a company’s success is shared among employees, partners, customers and the communities it serves.
Balancing purpose & profit
Another central theme of the book is the relationship between financial success and social impact.
Drawing on G Adventures’ history in community tourism, Poon Tip challenges the notion that businesses must choose between profitability and purpose.
He points to initiatives such as Planeterra, the company’s nonprofit partner supporting community tourism projects, and Trees for Days, alongside G Adventures’ efforts to develop its own methods for measuring positive impact.
The book also explores why the company has sometimes chosen to establish its own benchmarks rather than adopt established certification frameworks, such as B Corp.
For Poon Tip, the objective isn’t simply to challenge convention, but to question whether traditional business practices are necessarily the most effective.
Rebuilding after the pandemic
One of the book’s most significant chapters revisits the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought G Adventures’ operations to a near standstill.
After three decades of growth, the company saw its revenue disappear almost overnight, forcing Poon Tip to dismantle much of the business he had built.
While the crisis represented one of the most difficult periods of his career, he also came to view it as an opportunity to reconsider the company’s structure, priorities and long-term direction.
The experience reinforced his belief that successful entrepreneurship isn’t necessarily about anticipating every challenge, but about recognizing opportunities when circumstances change.
Lessons from failure & the universe
Beyond leadership and business strategy, Communityship also examines the personal experiences, setbacks and unexpected encounters that have shaped Poon Tip’s career.
He reflects on what he describes as moments of being guided by the universe, from chance meetings and cultural breakthroughs to business opportunities that emerged unexpectedly.
The book explores the importance of intuition, listening to others and recognizing that some of the most valuable lessons come from experiences that can’t be planned.
Poon Tip also revisits mistakes made throughout G Adventures’ history, including the company’s responses to disasters and crises affecting the communities where it operates.
Drawing on those experiences, he questions conventional approaches to charitable giving and whether providing money or resources is always the most effective way to create meaningful, long-term change.
The broader message is that businesses should focus less on predicting the future and more on building resilient communities capable of navigating uncertainty together.
Communityship: Lessons from the Universe and the Business of Everyone will be released November 24, 2026.
