Amex GBT’s New Tool Helps Travel Managers Cut Emissions Without Guesswork
by Bruce Parkinson
The deal was first announced in March 2024.
Travel managers are being asked to play a bigger role in reducing emissions as corporate climate commitments gain traction.
With so many variables in corporate travel, it can be difficult to know which changes will have the greatest impact. Amex GBT says a new tool helps address this by analyzing a company’s travel behaviour and identifying opportunities to reduce emissions and manage costs. Recommendations connect directly to policy settings, making updates easy to implement.
The new Sustainability Recommendations feature is now live on the Egencia platform across Canada. Built in response to travel manager feedback, it provides tailored guidance based on recent travel patterns, along with a clear view of emissions and cost impact.
The recommendations include:
● Air versus rail: A combination of the air vs. rail feature and a travel policy that showcases relevant rail options. Travel managers determine when it’s reasonable to take the rail alternative, such as for shorter trips.
● Carbon efficient flights: Highlights flights that are more efficient than average. Travellers can easily compare and select these in the flight results search page.
● Cabin class preferences: Travel managers can steer travellers to less carbon intensive cabin classes based on the length of the flight.
● SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel): Travel managers can see SAF lifecycle reductions in their travel program and access insights information from Avelia, one of the world’s first and now most established SAF procurement platforms.

Travel managers can easily implement these recommendations through a direct link to their policy page, giving them seamless control of their program. Additional details are available in a new sustainability recommendations dashboard in the travel managers’ personalized analytics studio.
“Our company is committed to helping clients make corporate travel more sustainable,” said Nora Lovell Marchant, VP of Global Sustainability, Amex GBT. “By providing tailored, data-driven policy recommendations, we’re helping travel managers bridge the gap between where they are today on their sustainability journey and what they want to achieve tomorrow.”
The release follows Amex GBT’s earlier introduction of a carbon pricing model and comes at a time when many Canadian companies are looking for practical, implementable steps to meet ESG goals, without disrupting operations. It is part of the company’s broader push to put sustainability solutions front and centre.
