Amid the US Tariff crisis, British Columbia and Alberta are boosting funding for its tourism sectors to attract more visitors to the provinces.
In BC, The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and the Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan) announced a $4.3 million investment to enhance local attractions.
“British Columbia is home to world-class tourism attractions and entrepreneurs with ambitious plans to welcome visitors to B.C. and bring more B.C. products to international markets,” said Sajjan. “With spring break around the corner, now is the perfect time to explore all that B.C. has to offer. And with the opportunities in our global marketplace, now is the time to bring more of B.C. to the world. PacifiCan is proud to support initiatives that showcase our region’s rich cultural heritage, drive economic growth, boost exports and create good jobs in our communities.”
Among the recipients is Destination BC who will receive $250,000.
“This new PacifiCan funding will allow Destination BC to strengthen connections between our tourism operators and global travel trade specialists, bringing more visitors to more communities, creating jobs, and driving long-term growth for BC’s visitor economy,” said Meredith Moll, Director of Partner and Market Development, Destination BC.
In Alberta, Minister Terry Duguid announced a federal investment of over $2.9 million for nine projects showcasing the province’s landscapes, Indigenous experiences, and attractions.
“Alberta has incredible stories to share—from its rich Indigenous heritage to its stunning landscapes and unique local experiences,” said Duguid. “Supporting tourism at home means backing local businesses, creating jobs, and strengthening our economy. These projects will help more people, from Canada and beyond, experience everything that makes Alberta special.”
Tourism Calgary will receive $434,000 to expand inclusive programming for Chinook Blast in 2025 and 2026, develop Indigenous programming for the 2026 Grey Cup, and develop a new Indigenous music festival.
PacifiCan is the federal economic development agency dedicated to British Columbians, supporting inclusive growth throughout the province. In B.C., tourism employs over 125,000 people in 16,800 tourism-related businesses and in 2023, generated $22.1 billion in revenue.
PrairiesCan is funding arm of the Tourism Growth Program (TGP) in developing local tourism products and experiences. Alberta’s visitor economy reached $12.7 billion in tourism expenditures in 2023, contributing $9.9 billion towards provincial GDP and the equivalent of nearly 90,000 jobs.
