Canada’s Cruise Ship Ban Extended Into the Fall

Canada’s Transport Minister Marc Garneau on Friday morning announced that cruise ships will not be allowed to dock in Canadian ports or sail in Canadian waters through Oct. 31, 2020.
The news extends the ban that first began in April amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
“Our Government continues to work with other levels of government, transportation industry stakeholders, and Indigenous peoples to re-examine measures and to ensure Canada’s transportation system remains safe and secure during this time. We are all in this together,” Garneau said.
In a statement, the Government of Canada said: “Keeping Canadians and transportation workers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic is Transport Canada’s top priority.”
In 2019, Canada welcomed more than two million tourists in 140 cruise ships at its ports.
Last week, the Government of Canada also announced that the U.S.-Canada border will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least June 21 through a mutual agreement with both countries.
