Amex Forecasts Summer Travel Rise To Alternative International Destinations

by Richard D'Ambrosio  June 28, 2017

In a recent study of bookings, American Express Travel is predicting a 26% increase in international travel this summer, with a particular rise in interest to more off-the-beaten-path destinations.

For example, American Express forecasts a 117% increase in travel to the Maldives and a 114% increase to the Spanish port city of Bilbao.

In a press release, Claire Bennett, EVP and GM of American Express Travel, said “travelers are increasingly drawn to this idea of luxury escapism and seeking ways to disconnect – not from technology or creature comforts – but from the everyday chaos.”

Other destinations that are experiencing a high level of interest include Ho Chi Minh City (97% increase), Vietnam; Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda (90%), and Zagreb (89%), Croatia’s northwestern capital. In Morocco, Marrakech will see a 77%, increase, American Express forecasts. Ixtapa, Mexico; Mumbai, and Glasgow are expected to see increases of 69%.

American Express said Israel will experience a 56% increase in travel this summer.
