Canada Updates Advisory for Cuba; Travellers Advised to Avoid Non-Essential Travel

Canada Updates Advisory for Cuba; Travellers Advised to Avoid Non-Essential Travel

Canadians remain the largest group of tourists to Cuba.

The Canadian government has updated its travel advisory for Cuba to avoid non-essential travel due to worsening fuel shortages.

The alert was updated Wednesday night (February 11), stating worsening shortages of fuel, electricity, and basic necessities including food, water, and medicine, which can also affect resorts. Fuel availability has decreased, is difficult to predict, and may disrupt ground transportation.

Earlier this week, Canadian airlines announced they have suspended service to Cuba for upcoming trips. The Cuba Tourist Board has sent out a letter thanking Canadian travel advisors and travellers for their many years of support.

Last year, close to 900,000 Canadians visited Cuba, making it one of the country’s most important winter sun destinations with Sunwing Vacations having the largest program.
