Intrepid & Explore Launch Appeals to Raise Funds for Flood-Ravaged Nepal & Tibet

Intrepid Travel  and Explore Worldwide are among the tour operators eager to help following catastrophic flash flooding in Nepal and Tibet.

According to the latest information at least 538 people are confirmed dead in Nepal, with 1,300 still missing, including up to 30 Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Intrepid has launched an emergency appeal through its not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation. The company will dollar match all funds raised up to $100,000 following the disaster that has devasted communities in Timure, Rasuwagadhi, Syabrubesi and along the Trishuli River corridor.

At time of publishing, the Intrepid appeal has already raised $160,000.

“The scale of this disaster is devastating. Communities across the region are grieving the loss of loved ones while also facing significant challenges in the weeks and months ahead,” said Yalamber Rai, General Manager, Nepal, Intrepid Travel.

“Support will be critical to recovery efforts, and we are encouraging anyone who is able to donate to the appeal or help spread the word. Together, we can help ensure affected communities receive the support they need during this incredibly difficult time.”

Intrepid Travel has a significant operation in Nepal – it runs 26 itineraries in the country and has a local team of 463 people (office employees, tour leaders, porters and assistant guides). The company says no Intrepid customers or team members were in the affected regions at the time, and all Intrepid travellers in the country are safely accounted for.

The Intrepid Foundation’s emergency appeal is in partnership with Australian Red Cross, which is supporting response efforts on the ground. All funds raised will go towards impacted communities, including emergency shelter support, water sanitation and hygiene, first aid and health services.

The Explore Foundation is supporting the British Red Cross Emergency Appeal to provide life-saving assistance. Explore will match-fund all donations up to £5,000 ($9,500). The Himalaya Emergency Appeal has already raised over $50,000.

“We’ve already been in touch with our colleagues and tour leaders in Nepal, and we know that some of our tour leaders have been directly affected. Our personal connection to this wonderful and welcoming community makes the devastation feel especially close to home. Anyone who has visited Nepal will know what a special country it is, and we hope you’ll be able to help us support the relief effort,” Intrepid Travel said in a press statement.
