JetBlue Launches Basic Economy Called Blue Basic

JetBlue’s long awaited entry into the basic economy market is here. 

JetBlue this week announced that it has introduced its basic economy fare called Blue Basic on some of its routes. The no-frills fare will allow passengers to get a cheaper ticket price, but will have a number of limitations including no cancellations or ticket changes, no seat selection until check-in, and no early boarding (Blue Basic passengers will board last). 

The fare does include other JetBlue perks like the airline’s free WiFi, snacks, drinks, and onboard, seat-back television. Like other JetBlue passengers, Blue Basic flyers will have to pay for their checked baggage. 

The news is the culmination of JetBlue’s plan to break into the basic economy market, which the airline announced more than a year ago. Other major U.S. carriers including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United have also announced entries into the basic economy market. 

The fare is currently only available for some of JetBlue’s domestic flights, depending on route, date, and demand. According to reports, JetBlue still hasn’t decided whether or not it will offer Blue Basic on its transatlantic flights, from New York and Boston to London, which are launching in 2021.
