Paris And L.A. Win Bids To Host The Olympics

Paris will host the 2024 Olympic Games and Los Angeles will host the games in 2028, the International Olympic Committee confirmed today.

This is the first time the Committee has awarded two games in one vote, as reported in Travel Market Report earlier this month.

Several of the original bidders for the games have pulled out over the previous months, including Rome, Hamburg, Budapest and Boston, until only Los Angeles and Paris were left. In an unusual move, the IOC left it up to the two cities to broker a deal about which would host 2024 and which 2028. From the beginning, though, insiders gave Paris the edge.

It’s been more than a decade, since the Atlanta games in 1996, since the United States has hosted the Olympics. Bids by New York in 2012 and Chicago in 2016 were both unsuccessful.

Los Angeles has hosted two previous Summer games, in 1932 and 1984.

Where recent Olympic host cities have ended up in the red, both these winners say they will rely largely on existing structures for the games, and so will limit their investments.
