Reminder: UK’s Implementation of ETA is Fast Approaching

Reminder: UK’s Implementation of ETA is Fast Approaching

The implementation date for the United Kingdom’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement is fast approaching.

Effective February 25, 2026, the UK Home Office will introduce new entry requirements for travellers from countries whose citizens do not currently require a visa for short stays of up to six months.

Recognizing that changes to entry requirements can prompt questions from both travellers and travel advisors—particularly during transition periods—we are sharing the latest guidance from the UK Home Office to help you support clients navigating these updates.

Beginning February 25, 2026, Canadian travellers who do not require a visa for short stays of up to six months will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to travelling to the UK. Travellers without a valid ETA will not be permitted to board their transportation and will not be allowed to enter the UK.

Dual British or Irish citizens are not eligible to apply for an ETA and must instead travel using one of the following:

  • A valid British passport
  • A valid Irish passport
  • A valid passport with a Certificate of Entitlement

VisitBritain is reminding advisors that policy and operational processes around these new travel requirements sit with the Home Office. While it does not determine or implement these policies, they are actively passing on the questions and concerns raised by industry, travellers and partners to the Home Office.

VisitBritain recommends reviewing and sharing the official resources below with your teams and clients to ensure accurate and up-to-date advice. These materials are maintained by the Home Office and the links provided will reflect the latest information and updates.
