Frontier Simplifies Its Fares
by Michele McDonaldFrontier Airlines eliminated its controversial Basic fare as part of a “simplification” of its fare structure.
The previous structure had caused a good deal of consternation among travel agents because it allowed advance seat assignments only for bookings made on its website.
The Basic fare was available only through third parties and did not allow advance seat assignments. The Classic and Classic Plus fares could only be booked on the carrier’s website.
In addition, some fees, such as change fees and unaccompanied minor fees, were higher for third-party bookings.
Fare options
Travelport threatened to terminate its full-content agreement with Frontier when it was introduced in October, 2012.
Last June Frontier also added a carry-on bag fee for passengers who did not book on its website.
Effective April 28, the new structure has only two fare options: Economy and Classic Plus, and both are available to GDSs.
Website bookers
However, advance seat assignments at the time of booking will remain available only to passengers who book on Frontier’s website and some fees will remain lower to website bookers.
Economy fares have been reduced by an average of 12% on every nonstop route Frontier flies.
The fares are fully unbundled: Passengers will pay for carry-on bags, checked bags and seat assignments.
The Classic Plus fare includes a fully refundable ticket, no change fees, extra leg room seating, one free checked bag, and one free carry-on bag.
Ascent and Summit tier level members of the EarlyReturns loyalty program will continue to receive a free carry-on bag, two free checked bags and Stretch or Select seating with no additional charge.
