Norwegian Cruise Line Names Luis Fonsi Godfather of Viva
by Dori Saltzman /Norwegian Cruise Line has named five-time Latin GRAMMY winner Luis Fonsi – best known for his chart-topping hit “Despacito” – as godfather of its next new ship, Norwegian Viva. Fonsi will officially welcome the ship into the Norwegian fleet on November 28 in Miami.
“We are thrilled to welcome Latin music icon Luis Fonsi to the NCL family as Godfather of Norwegian Viva and to join us as we christen our newest ship,” said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Miami, our hometown, is immersed in Latin culture, and we want to celebrate Norwegian Viva’s debut with an infusion of Latin talent headlined by Luis.”
Traditionally, a role for women, Norwegian Cruise Line broke with tradition in 2015, when it named Pitbull as godfather of Norwegian Escape. Since then, it has had two other godfathers: Elvis Duran (Norwegian Bliss) and Chinese singer Wang Leehom (Norwegian Joy).
Norwegian Viva, the second in the line’s Prima Class, will head to San Juan after the naming, where it will homeport for its inaugural Caribbean season starting December 15. It will offer a variety of seven-day Caribbean voyages through April 2024, with calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. John’s, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. It will return to Europe for a summer of cruises to Europe from Athens, Lisbon, Rome, and Venice.
