Canada’s Lynx Air to Cease Operations on Monday

Lynx Air, the low-cost Canadian carrier, will cease all operations on Monday, Feb. 26 as it files for bankruptcy protection.

The airline was only recently launched in April 2022 and said on Thursday that, despite some success growing in the market, the costs of running the airline in 2024 proved “too steep a mountain” to overcome.

“Tremendous work was put into the launch, growth, and expansion of Lynx Air over the past two years,” Lynx wrote in a message on Thursday. “The compounding financial pressures associated with inflation, fuel costs, exchange rates, costs of capital, regulatory costs, and competitive tension in the Canadian market have ultimately proved too steep a mountain for our organization to overcome.”

All those on canceled flights will be notified via email. Lynx said anyone on flights from Feb. 26 onward will be able to contact their credit card company to be refunded. Any Lynx travel or flight vouchers will no longer be accepted once the airline ceases operations.

Despite only being a few years old, Lynx built a loyal following with low-cost routes out of Calgary, Edmonton, Fredericton, Halifax, Hamilton, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and more. It flew a fleet of Boeing 737s.

The plan for the airline now is to seek protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.
