FAA Lifts Nationwide Ground Stop for American Airlines Flights Following IT Outage

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lifted a nationwide ground stop for American Airlines and its regional subsidiaries Tuesday evening following a brief system-wide IT outage.
The ground stop, initially requested by the carrier around 6:30 p.m. ET, temporarily halted all domestic flights while technical teams worked to restore core operational systems.
According to an official update from the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC Advisory 234), the ground stop was officially canceled for mainline and subsidiary flights shortly before 7:20 p.m. ET. However, operational restrictions remain in effect for flights heading into Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), one of the airline’s major East Coast hubs.
In a statement posted to social media during the disruption, American Airlines confirmed that its IT team was working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
The outage adds to a challenging evening for air travel along the East Coast. Severe summer thunderstorms have already forced widespread ground delays, swap routes, and weather-related ground stops at major regional hubs including New York (LGA, JFK, EWR), Washington, D.C. (DCA, IAD), and Boston (BOS).
