As part of its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, Spirit Airlines is trimming its assets at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
Spirit is transferring two of its gates at O’Hare to American Airlines for $30 million, a move that was approved by a judge at the bankruptcy court for the Southern District of New York on Monday. Spirit had four total gates at O’Hare and will now be left with just two after the deal.
Spirit has significantly trimmed its operations since filing for bankruptcy in August 2025.
According to Reuters, Spirit has already ceased operations at 14 airports and rejected leases for 80 aircraft. The carrier still expects to continue operations, however streamlined, and has not stopped adding new routes.
On Dec. 4, Spirit announced it had started new service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), one of its hubs, and Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) in Grand Cayman. That service includes Spirit First and Premium Economy, two relatively new cabin classes for Spirit, which debuted as part of its post-bankruptcy plans.
