Air India has launched a new nonstop service between Toronto and Mumbai, establishing the only direct air connection between Canada’s largest city and India’s financial capital.
The inaugural flight departed Toronto Pearson on Sunday (Oct. 25), marking another step in the airline’s expansion in the Canadian market and strengthening travel options for business, leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives (VFR) passengers.
Operating three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, the new route will add nearly 2,000 seats per week between Canada and India, with onward connections available through Air India’s domestic and international network in Mumbai.
The inaugural departure was celebrated at Toronto Pearson with government representatives, industry stakeholders, travel trade partners and airline employees. Among those attending was Mahaveer Singhvi, Consul General of India in Toronto.
The route serves an established travel market. According to data from OAG Traffic Analyzer cited by Air India, approximately 128,000 round-trip passengers travelled between Toronto and Mumbai from June 2025 to May 2026.
The launch also comes as Canada and India look to strengthen economic relations, including discussions around a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which could help support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030.
More Premium Seats, Upgraded Cabins
The new Toronto-Mumbai flights are operated using an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER, featuring eight First Class suites with privacy doors, 40 fully flat Business Class seats and 280 Economy Class seats.
Passengers will also have access to onboard Wi-Fi throughout the flight.
The launch follows another significant product upgrade for Air India’s Canadian operations.
The airline recently introduced its new Boeing 787-9 aircraft on the daily Toronto-Delhi route, bringing its latest cabin interiors to Canada and introducing Premium Economy on the service for the first time.
Combined, the aircraft upgrades will increase Air India’s premium seating capacity between Toronto and India by 71 per cent this winter.
By January 2027, all Air India flights departing Toronto Pearson are expected to feature either new or significantly upgraded cabin interiors.
“Canada has long been a cornerstone of Air India’s international network and remains one of our largest overseas markets. As we transform Air India, it is only fitting that our guests from Canada are among the first to experience many of the improvements we are making across our airline. The launch of our new Toronto-Mumbai route, the deployment of our newest aircraft to Delhi, and the significant increase in premium seating capacity together represent our confidence in the market and our commitment to offering a world-class travel experience between Canada and India,” said Nipun Aggarwal, chief commercial officer at Air India, in a press release.
With the addition of Mumbai, Air India will operate 20 weekly flights between Canada and India during the winter 2026-27 season, serving three routes: Toronto-Mumbai, Toronto-Delhi and Vancouver-Delhi.
