American Airlines Cuts Nine Routes, Scales Back Flights to Toronto & Montreal

American Airlines is making significant changes to its route network, eliminating or suspending nine services across North America, including three routes connecting the United States and Canada.

According to schedule data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, the U.S. carrier is dropping several domestic and international services, with some cancellations extending indefinitely.

Among the changes are flights linking Montreal with Miami and Dallas/Fort Worth, as well as service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

Miami–Montreal Service Disappearing

One of the most notable changes involves American Airlines’ longstanding route between Miami airport (MIA) and Montreal-Trudeau airport (YUL).

The airline launched nonstop service between the two cities in 1992. Over the years, the route has shifted between year-round and seasonal operations, including a suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic.

More recently, the service operated seasonally from January through September.

American is currently scheduled to resume flights between Miami and Montreal on December 17, 2026, operating through January 5, 2027.

However, all flights beyond that date have been removed from the airline’s schedule, leaving the route’s longer-term future uncertain.

New York–Toronto Return Scrapped

American Airlines is also abandoning plans to restore nonstop flights between New York JFK and Toronto Pearson.

The carrier introduced the route in 2023, operating up to two daily flights before suspending service in May 2026.

Flights had been scheduled to resume in April 2027 and continue through May 26, but those services have now been removed from the schedule.

Dallas–Montreal Flights Temporarily Suspended

A third Canadian route is also affected, although it is not being eliminated entirely.

American Airlines is temporarily suspending flights between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Montreal for April and much of May 2027, according to Cirium’s schedule data.

Unlike the Miami–Montreal and JFK–Toronto changes, the Dallas–Montreal adjustment represents a temporary interruption rather than a complete route cancellation.

Beyond Canada

Beyond Canada, American Airlines is making changes to two routes serving Mexico.

Service between Charlotte, North Carolina, and San José del Cabo is scheduled to end permanently in August 2027.

The airline has also dropped its Miami–Tulum service, which was discontinued in 2025.

Several domestic U.S. routes are also affected.

American’s Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany service has been suspended since September 7, while flights between Washington Reagan National Airport and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, will be suspended beginning in November, with service scheduled to resume April 5, 2027.

The carrier is also ending flights between Chicago O’Hare and Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 5, 2027, less than a year after launching the route in June 2026.

Meanwhile, American’s Phoenix–Provo, Utah, route will end January 5, 2027, with lower demand cited as the reason.

What It Means for Canadian Travel Advisors

For Canadian travel advisors, the schedule changes are worth noting when planning U.S. connections and winter travel.

The removal of Miami–Montreal flights after January 5 could affect clients seeking nonstop service between Quebec and South Florida, while the cancellation of the planned JFK–Toronto relaunch removes another potential option for travellers heading between Toronto and New York.

While some of the affected routes have specific end dates, others have simply been removed from future schedules, meaning additional changes or reinstatements remain possible.

Travel advisors should verify flight availability directly with American Airlines before finalizing itineraries.
