American Airlines Bringing Back Seatback Screens, Expanding Premium Seating in Major Fleet Overhaul

American Airlines is adding seatback screens to its narrow-body fleet, marking a major strategy shift after previously removing monitors in favor of streaming to personal devices.

American plans to add 4K displays with Bluetooth audio pairing and USB-C charging on all Boeing and Airbus deliveries starting in 2028, along with retrofitting the rest of its narrow-body fleet over the next decade. The carrier will also integrate high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi starting in 2027.

The move is part of a larger fleet overhaul that American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden called “one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history.”

Alongside the entertainment updates, American will grow its premium narrow-body seating footprint from 25% to roughly 40%. The airline plans to achieve this by retrofitting Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft with an extra row of First Class, configuring upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 10 deliveries with 24 First Class seats, expanding Main Cabin Extra legroom across the fleet-which includes dedicated bin space and complimentary drinks-and refreshing cabin interiors with more storage, redesigned seats, and enhanced lighting.

The onboard updates complement broader ground investments, including expanded Admirals Club footprints and new lounge dining concepts.
