As WestJet Strike Looms – Are Your Clients Covered?

by Bruce Parkinson  July 31, 2026
As WestJet Strike Looms – Are Your Clients Covered?

As a flight attendant strike looms at Canada’s second-largest airline, Canadians with travel plans may be facing flight disruptions, cancellations and unexpected expenses.

The Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada (THIA) is offering advice for travellers and travel advisors with clients booked with WestJet over the coming days.

“When an airline strike is possible, the most important thing travellers can do is understand their options before they’re disrupted,” said THIA spokesperson Will McAleer.

“Start with the airline to confirm whether your flight is affected and what refunds or rebooking options may be available, then review your travel insurance policy to see whether trip cancellation, interruption, delay or missed connection benefits apply.”

McAleer stresses that coverage can vary by policy, and timing matters — especially if the strike has already been identified as a known event.

“If you’re unsure, contact your travel insurance provider before making alternate arrangements or incurring additional expenses.”

Start with the airline: WestJet is the first point of contact for information on refunds or flight rescheduling. It’s important to double-check the airline’s policies, as updates may have been made as strike action loomed.

Check travel insurance coverage: If the travellers’ insurance policy covers trip cancellation, interruption, delay or missed connection (and a strike is listed as a covered reason) they may be reimbursed for prepaid travel costs that WestJet or other providers won’t refund.

Check the “Known Event” date: Many travel insurance providers may indicate when the threat of the strike became a known event. Policies purchased prior to this date may include coverage, but those purchased after may not.

THIA is encouraging travellers and advisors to review their travel insurance coverage carefully and contact their providers for any clarification if they have questions.
