“Near Miss” at JFK Involving Air Canada Flight From Toronto

Just one month after a runway accident claimed the lives of two Air Canada pilots at New York’s La Guardia airport , there’s been a near-miss at JFK with an Air Canada jet this week.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration reports on Monday (April 20) a Republic Airways jet missed its intended approach and flew too close to an Air Canada plane. Both pilots took immediate action and were able to respond in time, preventing a collision.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the incident occurred at around 2:35 p.m.
“The crew of Republic Airways Flight 4464 performed a go-around at John F. Kennedy International Airport after missing the intended approach path and flying too close to Jazz Aviation Flight 554, which was cleared to land on a parallel runway,” the FAA said in a statement.
The Jazz Aviation flight operating for Air Canada Express originated from Toronto, while the Republic Airways flight, operating as American Airlines, departed from Indianapolis.
The incidents are raising discussions about airline safety in the U.S where there is increased pressure on air traffic controllers who have been plagued by a shortage and are working without pay during government shutdowns.
