Nexus Fee Will Increase to $120 USD in October

The Nexus trusted-traveler program is about to get more costly.

The Nexus application fee is set to increase from $50 (USD) to $120 (USD) effective October 1, 2024. The price change is subject to approval of regulatory amendments in the United States and Canada.

Nexus is a program offered by The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that speeds up crossing from Canada into the U.S. by pre-screening travelers. Once approved, the membership is good for five years. 

Nexus currently has more than 1.8 million members, the majority of which are Canadian.

According to a statement released by CBSA, the increase is necessary to cover the program’s cost: “The new fee would reflect more accurately the cost of administrating the program and the investment required for future program improvements, including technology and infrastructure enhancements.”

The current price was set when the program launched more than 20 years ago.

“The proposed increase would help keep up with the high demand for the program and continue to improve Nexus,” said the CBSA. “Since April 2023, we have received over 510,000 applications and completed almost 10,000 interviews every 2 weeks.”

The CBSA anticipates an increase in demand for Nexus applications between now and October, and encourages interested parties to book their interviews as soon as possible. Appointments are available on the Trusted Traveler Programs System, and many enrolment centers offer next-day availability for scheduling interviews.
