Virgin Atlantic Becomes First Airline to Launch App Within ChatGPT
by Marsha Mowers
Virgin Atlantic has taken a bold step, becoming the first airline to launch an app within ChatGPT; a move that could reshape how travellers shop for flights and how advisors engage with clients.
Building on Virgin Atlantic’s AI-powered Concierge, the Virgin Atlantic app in ChatGPT allows customers to search for flights using everyday language; they can ask “show me flights to London in July” and options immediately appear. Once a flight is selected, travellers are directed to the airline’s website or mobile app to complete their booking.
“We’re proud to be the first airline in the world to launch an app in ChatGPT, as we continue to focus on meeting our customers where they are and making it easier than ever to connect with us,” said Juha Jaervinen, Chief Customer Officer at Virgin Atlantic.
“Whether you know exactly where you want to go or you’re just looking for inspiration, this experience is designed to make planning and booking your next trip simple and seamless. You can simply ask, and we’ll do the rest, showing the best options quickly.
“By combining the power of AI with the personality and care we’re known for, we’re creating experiences that feel more personal, more intuitive and unmistakably Virgin Atlantic.”
The announcement is on the heels of recent AI updates in the industry; just last week at the Virtuoso 2026 Symposium in Seoul, Chairman and CEO Matthew D. Upchurch reinforced the importance of human connection in conjunction with new technology.
“AI has expanded what can be automated at a scale we have never seen before,” he said. “More of the predictable is being handled, which shifts where human value truly resides. He noted that as technology advances, not all tasks carry equal worth. “The real challenge is not just technological, it is human. The instinct in times of change is often to do more and respond faster, but that can work against us.”
In Canada, ChatGPT is currently more of a planning tool than a booking engine Most bookings still happen through advisors or suppliers. None of the major tour operators Sunwing, Transat, Air Canada Vacations, WestJet Vacations etc are using it for bookings. And while AI does have its benefits in terms of helping advisors accelerate early-stage trip planning with research and information, it can lack the overall nuances necessary for more complex trip planning and the human trust factor that make advisors successful in the first place.
“Technology can enhance the experience, but it can’t replace the depth of understanding that comes from truly knowing a client,” added Upchurch.
