Reaction to the killing of a cartel leader in Puerto Vallarta captured headlines and briefly impacted tourism two weeks ago. But Mexico is a big country with diverse tourism regions separated by thousands of kilometres. Quintana Roo, the most important of those regions, is reporting that all is well.
“The tourist activity in the Mexican Caribbean continued with total normality during the week of February 21 to 28, during which the destinations of the state are registered with an average hotel occupancy of 85.4%,” local officials stated in a press release.
“The 12 tourist destinations of the state operate without interruptions, with airports, ports, cruise terminals, transport services, hotel areas, public beaches and tourist attractions operating regularly and providing quality experiences for our visitors.”
The Mexican Caribbean welcomes millions of visitors each year and is one of Canada’s favourite destinations. But headlines about violence in the country – which rarely impacts visitors – definitely creates fear among potential visitors.

Renée Boisvert, Vice-President, Tour Operator Products & Sales at Transat, says it is important to hear from local authorities about the actual situation on the ground.
“We are pleased to see that local authorities confirm the smooth running of tourist activities in the region,” Boisvert said.
“This is also what we are hearing from our hotel partners on the ground: operations are continuing as usual, and travellers are fully enjoying their stay. Clients can therefore plan their trip to the State of Quintana Roo with complete peace of mind.”
The Quintana Roo press statement continued:
“Through the experiences made in various points of the Mexican Caribbean, we collect testimonies of tourists who share our experiences enjoying the beaches, public plazas, hotels, restaurants and the diversity of activities. The testimonies reflect the real experience of visitors to the country, the familiar environment, the hospitality and the variety of tourist offerings available in 12 destinations.
El Caribe Mexicano reaffirms its tourist dynamism and operational capacity, consolidating itself as a hospital and reliable destination for national and international visitors, and positioning itself as the World Capital of Vacations.”
