Marriott International, Inc. has terminated its licensing agreement with short-term rental company Sonder Holdings Inc.
As a result, Sonder is no longer affiliated with Marriott Bonvoy, and Sonder properties are not available for new bookings on Marriott’s channels.
Marriott says its immediate priority is supporting guests currently staying at Sonder properties and those with upcoming reservations.
Sonder positioned itself as a “global hospitality provider.” It leased small hotels and apartments and took over daily operations. Over the past couple of years it took over a couple of boutique properties in Toronto – Templar Hotel, now The Slate, and the Beverley Hotel.
Sonder apartments and boutique hotels – with close to 10,000 units in total — were located in more than 40 cities around the world, primarily in Europe and the United States. Sonder and Marriott announced a partnership in 2024.
News reports say some guests were blindsided by the news, and given less than 24 hours to vacate the premises.
The hotel company says it will be contacting guests who booked directly through Marriott channels, including marriott.com, the Marriott Bonvoy App and Marriott’s worldwide reservation centres, to address their reservation and booking needs.
Guests with questions about current or future reservations at a Sonder property booked through Marriott channels can contact Marriott customer service here.
