Survey: Gen-Z Travelers Crave Childhood Nostalgia, Still Don’t Trust A.I.

Gen-Z and younger Millennials want to relive their childhood vacations, according to a new survey from Contiki.

The tour operator, which specializes in the 18- to 35-year-old market, has unveiled the findings of its annual Voice of a Generation survey. Based on responses from over 1,000 Americans aged 18 to 35, the research offers insight into how Gen-Z and Millennials plan to travel in 2026.

The survey found that 78% either have already recreated a trip from their childhood or plan to, showing a steep increase in nostalgia as a factor influencing travel decisions.

“The Voice of a Generation survey is one of our favorite moments of the year because it gives us a direct window into what travelers want from their next trip,” says Toni Ambler, chief customer officer. “This insight is invaluable for travel advisors, as it shows how the next generation is shaping the travel experience and allows travel professionals to guide their clients toward trips that truly match their priorities and exceed expectations.”

Last year, Contiki’s Voice of a Generation survey found that Gen-Z didn’t trust A.I. for travel booking, despite many using the emerging tech as a research tool. That trend has shifted: the most recent survey found that trust in A.I. is “steadily rising.” Although 81% answered “no” or “maybe” to using A.I. to book their entire trip, many cited ChatGPT as a commonly used research tool.

Other trends identified in the survey include travelers prioritizing responsible tourism and self-care. The survey found that overcrowding was a concern, with 69% saying they would skip a bucket-list destination or seek out less-crowded alternatives to combat overtourism, and 38% revealed they actively seek out sustainable experiences from environmentally conscious brands.

In terms of wellness, 67% cited burnout as a major motivator for travel, 79% said they would consider booking a sober travel experience, and 53% continue their wellness routines while traveling. There is also a clear interest in the active travel trend: 66% said they would consider a hiking activity, and 46% would try rafting.
