National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions Will Enter European River Cruise Market

National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions will enter the European river cruises market in 2026 through a new agreement with charter-only river cruise company Transcend Cruises.

According to Lindblad, the cruises will “reframe” European river cruising with the expedition mindset that Lindblad has been known for since its inception.

The two companies are working together to develop a series of customized itineraries crafted to “provide curious travelers the opportunity to embark on journeys of deep discovery and venture closer, deeper, and farther into the river-side cities, towns, and villages…”

The initial agreement with Transcend will run through at least 2028 and will see a notable year-over-year increase in annual European river cruise departures.

Transcend, which launched in 2023 by chartering a ship from Riverside Luxury Cruises, is currently building its own ships – Transcend Connect and Transcend Evolve, both of which will launch in 2026. The 135-meter ships, currently being built at the Den Bremen Shipyard in the Netherlands, will accommodate 120 guests. Neither company has yet announced which of these ships Lindblad will be chartering.

Each National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions voyage will be staffed by one of Lindblad’s veteran Expedition Leaders, several knowledgeable field staff, and at least one National Geographic expert. Staff will guide guests on private tours, exclusive tastings, and curated tours synonymous with the brand.

“We are thrilled for the upcoming launch of our unique River Expeditions in Europe – an experience our guests have long desired and will deeply enjoy,” said Natalya Leahy, CEO, Lindblad Expeditions. “We know that ‘how you see it’ matters, and that’s why we’ve curated these river voyages with the same depth, care, and expertise that define all of our expeditions.”

She added, “With National Geographic naturalists and historians, and exclusive events woven into each journey, our guests will explore Europe’s storied rivers in truly meaningful ways. We’re equally excited to partner with Transcend Cruises to introduce a brand-new ship, custom-designed to deliver the elevated, personalized experience our guests expect from us.”

Lindblad Expeditions is not new to river cruising, having offered itineraries on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the U.S., as well as the Nile and the Peruvian Amazon for many years, but this is the first time the company will be offering European river cruises.

“Lindblad Expeditions has been exploring rivers for decades, but a lot of consumers don’t associate us with river cruising because we historically haven’t marketed it that way,” a spokesperson for Lindblad told TMR. “This launch will represent a significant shift in the way we position our river expeditions and is a major milestone for our brand.”

“Transcend Cruises is extremely pleased to join Lindblad Expeditions in a symbiotic partnership,” said Hans Rood, CEO, Transcend Cruises. “We are a natural fit in working so close together with such a respected brand in mindful exploration travel. Our state-of-the-art newbuild river cruise ships offer both a luxury experience, as well as the opportunity to accommodate the lecturing and mind enriching requirements essential for their travelers. With a strong focus on wellness, sustainability, and best of services, we are the perfect fit to deliver the programs Lindblad Expeditions require.”

Details of National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ first-ever European river expedition season and the chartered vessel will be released in the coming weeks.

Lindblad is the second cruise line this year to make waves by announcing it will enter the European river cruise market. In January, Royal Caribbean Group announced it will launch Celebrity River Cruises in 2027.
