Mammoth Hotel at Yellowstone National Park Reopens After 2022 Floods

Yellowstone National Park is welcoming guests back to its Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabins this month after the hotel had closed due to unprecedented flooding in June 2022.

With 79 hotel rooms and 119 cabins, the Mammoth Hotel is one of the park’s nine large lodging facilities, which are all managed by Xanterra Travel Collection. The hotel and cabins reopened on July 1 and currently has vacancy for travelers looking for a nature-filled getaway.

“For guests, Mammoth is a popular place in the northern part of the park known as the Northern Range,” Rick Hoeninghausen, director of sales and marketing at Yellowstone National Park Lodges, an entity of Xanterra, told TMR. “The concentration of wildlife is very high. Having this hotel open again, it’s a decent size facility, so it’s that many more people who can come stay here and easily access the wildlife we have here in the northern part of the park.”

Mammoth Hotel was closed for more than a year after a bad storm damaged its wastewater treatment system, which is now rebuilt and operational. Certain entrances and park trails were also temporarily closed after the severe flooding but have gradually reopened.

In addition to the nine lodging facilities, Xanterra also runs four campgrounds and an RV park to allow for accommodations across the different areas of the massive national park.

“A lot of people who come here move around,” Hoeninghausen said. “It’s a big park. They may stay at Mammoth, then book something further south to access the lake. It adds to that guest experience.”

Mammoth Hotel is a historic lodging facility dating back to 1911 and renovated in the ‘30s and mostly recently in 2018; however, its rustic charm remains, making it popular among visitors. It is located at the north entrance, which was the park’s original entrance when it was first established as a national park in Gardiner, Montana in 1872.
