Xanterra Travel Collection this week opened its newest hotel, the Maswik South Lodge, inside of Grand Canyon National Park.

The hotel was originally built in 1971 before being revamped by Xanterra as part of a $30 million project that was originally announced in 2019 and was then delayed by the pandemic. The new property is the first new hotel in the Grand Canyon National Park in over 50 years.

In total, the property offers 120 rooms across four different buildings near the park’s South Rim—of those 120 rooms, 90 are standard rooms and 30 are kitchenette units. All rooms include private balconies.

The rooms, along with the hotel’s public spaces, include décor inspired by Native American artwork from the local area, with a color scheme that nods to the surrounding Grand Canyon. Xanterra has also placed a heavy emphasis on conservation and sustainability, with a design built to LEED Silver standards, use of reclaimed water onside, and Dark Sky compliant lighting.

For food and drink, the hotel is not far from Maswik Lodge which offers the Maswik Food Court and Pizza pub. The property also isn’t far from the Hermit’s Rest/Village Loop Shuttle Bus Transfer Station that provides access to the Village Route, a 50-minute round trip loop with 14 different stops in the park.

“This is the first major lodging improvement to take place in decades at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and we’re underway during the Centennial year of Grand Canyon National Park, which makes the investment all the more momentous,” said Mia Bell, General Manager of Grand Canyon, South Rim.

“The buildings served countless visitors for nearly 50 years and the new construction will offer a lodging option that meets the needs of many of our guests. We are proud to be a part of enhancing the national park experience, preparing it for the next 100 years.”
