Mandarin Oriental to Make Mexico Debut with Beachfront Resort
by Briana Bonfiglio /A new, luxury beachfront resort from Mandarin Oriental is coming to Mexico in 2028, as the hotel brand expands in the Americas.
Mandarin Oriental Kanai, Riviera Maya is now in the works, and, when finished, will feature 120 guestrooms and suites with private pools and views of the Caribbean Sea. It will also offer 50 branded residences, three pools, a variety of dining options and activities, a spa, and a kids’ club.
“Nestled in a breathtaking setting and embracing local culture through a curated range of exceptional experiences, art, and design, this resort promises to bring the next level of luxury hospitality to the region,” said Laurent Kleitman, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. “As shapers of culture and masters of our craft, we have designed every aspect of this resort with our guests at its heart, reflecting our dedication to legendary service and exceptional experiences.”
Kleitman added: “Extending our portfolio in the Americas, brings the brand closer to our North American fans and will introduce Mandarin Oriental to many new audiences.”
The gated resort will take up just 9% of a 680-acre property on the Yucatan Peninsula, and therefore be surrounded by pristine jungle and protected mangrove. Mexico City-based Migdal Arquitectos will incorporate Mayan architecture, while New York-based William Gray will design the interiors to blend seamlessly with the natural atmosphere, so that the hotel will have an indoor-outdoor vibe.
In addition, renowned Mexican artist Bosco Sodi is the art curator for the project. “Our creative approach will enhance the resort’s ambiance, creating spaces that inspire contemplation and connection with the environment,” Sodi said.
Mandarin Oriental Kanai, Riviera Maya will have activity offerings for kids and adults alike, from the comprehensive Kids’ Club to watersports at the beach, to the beach club, cafe, and pool bar. There will also be a private, residents-only beach club.
Dining options will include a range of international cuisine, plus Mexican dishes that prioritize locally grown ingredients. The all-inclusive Spa at Mandarin Oriental will be part of a larger wellness center that features an indoor lap pool and outdoor spa experiences.
Mandarin Oriental currently manages 41 hotels and 12 residences worldwide, with more on the way.
