Allianz: Irma Expected To Produce More Travel Insurance Claims Than Harvey

September 07, 2017

Allianz Global Assistance said it expects Hurricane Irma to produce more insurance claims than Hurricane Harvey.

While Allianz had received about 2,500 travel insurance claims related to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma through Wednesday, Sept. 6, 500 of those have already come from Irma, which is yet to make landfall in Florida.

“We think that most travelers impacted by Harvey have filed their claims,” said director of communications, Dan Durazo. About 2,000 claims were related to Harvey. “While we’ve received about 200 calls related to Harvey, we’ve already received more than 700 calls related to Irma and we expect that number to grow significantly.”

“We expect given Irma’s strength and Florida’s position as a top tourist destination, that Irma will drive significantly more travel insurance claims than Harvey. Irma will certainly be a significant travel event, especially if Orlando is impacted,” Durazo said.

For customers filing claims, many are taking advantage of the ability to file and track claims at Allianz’s website, or from any device, including from their smart phone using the company’s TravelSmart mobile app.
