The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to track Hurricane Beryl, the first major named hurricane of the 2024 season, on Tuesday.
As of 2 p.m., Beryl was about 175 southeast of Isla Beata, Dominican Republic and a little less than 500 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, moving west at 22 mph.
The expectation is that the center of the storm will pass near Jamaica on Wednesday and then the Cayman Islands on Thursday, before hitting the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Thursday night. When it does hit Jamaica, the NHC expects the storm to be at “near major hurricane intensity” with winds of over 100 mph. It is also anticipating storm surges of up to 9 ft. on the island’s coasts.
Currently, here are the warnings from the NHC:
- Hurricane Warning for Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac.
- Hurricane Watch for the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Punta Palenque to Anse d’Hainault.
- Tropical Storm Warning for the other side of the Dominican Republic, from Punta Palenque west to the border with Haiti, and then along the south coast of Haiti.
