Though summer officially came to an end this weekend, hurricane season in the Atlantic rolls on.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Monday that a tropical storm or disturbance is likely to hit the Caribbean this week, as a storm system is becoming “better organized” over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.
“A tropical depression or storm is likely to form within the next day or two as the system moves northward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea and into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, where additional development is expected,” the latest forecast says.
For the moment, the NHC says the “heavy rains” over portions of Central America are expected. After that, those in the northwestern Caribbean, the Yucatan Peninsula, and western Cuba are under threat depending on how the storm forms.
“Later this week, the system is forecast to move generally northward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and interests along the northern and northeastern Gulf Coast should also closely monitor the progress of this system,” the NHC said.
The NHC is currently giving the storm a 90% chance of forming.
