72% of Americans To Take A Summer Vacation, Spending Almost $1,000 Per Person

Nearly eight in ten Americans will be taking summer getaways this year, spending $941 per person mostly here at home, according to the American Express Spending & Saving Tracker.

According to American Express, 72% of Americans will vacation in the United States this summer, with only 15% traveling overseas.

The survey showed that millennials are slightly more likely to be traveling this summer, with 89% of them saying they are taking a trip, vs 80% of the general population.

Weekend getaways are extremely popular this summer, with the average American planning three between now and Labor Day, with beach trips and family visits the two most popular choices. Fourth of July weekend is the most popular, at 35%. Twenty four percent of Americans will get away on Memorial Day weekend, and 21% will relax away from home Labor Day weekend.

Americans are being more plan full this summer about their trips, the survey showed, with 46% saying they are planning their trips more than one month out from booking, vs. 37% in 2015. On average, they visit six websites for information before booking.
