Travel insurance is often hailed as a safety net, providing peace of mind to travelers in case of unexpected mishaps. However, beneath the one-click customer experience lurks numerous pitfalls, including aggressive upselling and hidden fees for services never requested or used. I just saw some egregious cases myself for clients who opted to book their flights on an OTA and got sucked into the expensive waters of insurance and OTA partnerships. Consumers are easy prey for inflated and incorrect insurance purchases based on the full ticket price without consideration of actual penalties.

The upsell game
One of the most common tactics employed by travel insurance companies is the aggressive upselling of unnecessary coverage. Whether it’s rental car insurance, trip cancellation protection, or medical coverage, transactional insurers often push additional policies and inflated non-refundable policies onto unsuspecting travelers, increasing the overall cost of their insurance package. These upsells may not align with the traveler’s needs, or duplicate coverage, leading to wasted money on the coverage they’ll never use.

Reading between the lines
Travel insurance policies are notorious for their complex language and hidden exclusions buried in the fine print. What may seem like comprehensive coverage at first glance can quickly unravel when you discover the myriad of exclusions that render certain scenarios ineligible for compensation. From pre-existing medical conditions to acts of terrorism, without professional agent’s training, unsuspecting clients fall victim to loopholes to deny claims, often leaving travelers stranded with hefty bills including insufficient coverage for astronomical out-of-country hospital bills.

Add-on fees: paying for services you didn’t request
In addition to upselling unnecessary coverage, OTA and direct-sell travel insurance often tack on add-on fees for services that travelers never requested or used. From administrative fees to processing charges, these hidden fees and higher insured amounts with lower coverage can significantly inflate or mislead the overall cost of insurance.   Even worse, many travelers only discover these shortcomings when they are traveling and something happens, or only look at the policy after the grace period has ended for a refund or appeal. If there is a credit card used, the cardholder blithely believes that it just covers everything! How wrong they are!

Overlapping coverage
Another common pitfall of travel insurance is overlapping coverage, where multiple policies provide similar or identical protections. For example, if you already have medical coverage through your health insurance or credit card, purchasing additional medical coverage through your travel insurance may amount to unnecessary duplication. However, insurers rarely disclose these overlaps upfront, leaving consumers to navigate a confusing web of policies and premiums on their own. Conversely, most people do not check their credit card coverage which can change often, and it does. Several days of medical coverage may be limited based on age, or even denied with pre-existing conditions. Trip cancellation is another tricky subject. Credit cards and bundled insurances may have very low maximums per person or family, leaving crippling liability or conversely may have a yearly or lifetime maximum.  

The cost of confusion
One of the most frustrating aspects of travel insurance is the lack of transparent pricing. Insurers often use complex algorithms and opaque pricing structures to determine premiums, making it difficult for consumers to compare policies and find the best value for their money. This lack of transparency only serves to exacerbate consumer frustration and erode trust in the industry as a whole. Having to take mandatory continuing education in insurance allows us to interpret value through dialogue, for our clients.

Limited coverage: falling through the cracks
Despite promises of comprehensive coverage, many travel insurance policies come with a laundry list of limitations and exclusions that leave travelers vulnerable to financial loss. From narrow definitions of “covered reasons” for trip cancellation to strict caps on reimbursement amounts, these limitations can leave travelers high and dry when they need insurance the most. COVID was one of the most confusing examples.

What’s the difference between travel insurance, all-inclusive insurance, and travel assurance?
Depending on your age, physical condition, cost, duration, and risk factors while you travel, as well as if you have a high-end credit card or home insurance policy that includes aspects of travel, purchasing some time of travel insurance or assurance should be at the top of a traveler’s list.  Many people falsely believe that if their credit card says that they have travel benefits, that means that they are automatically covered for a wide range of situations. As mentioned above, nothing is further from the truth. 

Travel ASSURANCE has no bearing on any of the standard benefits of travel INSURANCE. The world of travel assurance started with providing secure evacuation from global hotspots or for uninsurable travel to war zones or restricted travel destinations. Since COVID, several companies provide the option for this kind of coverage, but now also for medical evacuation by private medically equipped jets with staff, either to your home, local hospital, or in one case, to the hospital destination of your choice. This just requires a reputable verified medical opinion, like a supervised COVID test, not necessarily hospitalization.    
 
What’s a pre-existing condition anyway?
Defining pre-existing conditions is akin to defining beauty! It is subjective to the particular insurer, type of policy chosen, and type of condition. Age, last change in medication (up or down), when you last saw a doctor and many other factors can complicate allowing coverage and the cost. This is why opting for a policy within a prescribed time may be the best way to waive pre-existing condition restrictions and higher premiums. Sometimes age precludes those policies and special restricted coverage must be purchased.    

Our role in navigating the minefield 
While travel insurance can provide valuable protection against unforeseen circumstances, consumers not using the expertise of travel specialists in navigating the world of insurance, must tread carefully to avoid falling victim to the industry’s deceptive practices. We are vigilant about upselling, scrutinizing policy exclusions, and demanding transparency in pricing, so travelers can navigate this minefield and avoid being saddled with unnecessary fees and inadequate coverage. Ultimately, arming oneself with knowledge and skepticism is the best defense against the pitfalls of travel insurance. Or call us!
