American Airlines is now flying from Miami to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) daily, making it the only carrier to offer daily nonstop service from the Continental U.S. to BVI and the first nonstop flight from Miami in more than 25 years.

American is now flying the route, which takes about three hours, from Miami International into Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Tortola daily from now through Aug. 14. The carrier will then pause the route and resume it again in November.

American is operating the flights via Envoy Air under the American Eagle brand on an Embraer E175 aircraft, departing from Miami at 10:30 a.m. each day and returning from Terrance B. Lettsome at 2:10 p.m.

Clive McCoy, tourism director for the BVI, called the new route the “biggest news” for the BVI during this year’s Caribbean Marketplace.

“To meet demand, the biggest news is our flight from Miami because it’s really perfect timing,” said McCoy. “We are very happy for this because it gives people another option to get there because that’s always been one of our challenges.

“It’s why we love our guests to the British Virgin Islands,” he continued, “because they have to make a few stops to get here, so you have to really love the destination. So, we have demand, and will find ways to supply it.”
