American Airlines Quietly Raises Some International Bag Fees

American Airlines is raising checked bag fees for customers flying short-haul international flights by $5.

The airline had been charging $35 for the first checked bag on flights to and from Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America, but will now raise that price to $40, matching the fee American charges for domestic flights, according to an internal memo obtained by View from the Wing.

The change went into effect on Dec. 1.

The $40 fee is $5 more than Delta charges for both domestic and those short-haul international flights, and the same as what United charges. Both American and United offer a $5 discount for passengers who prepay their bag fees instead of paying at the airport.
