American Airlines is investing $1 billion in a new renovation of Concourse D at Miami International Airport (MIA) called the Gate D60 project.
The project will break ground in 2027 and will help American usher in its “next chapter of travel” at Miami International, with a new three-level Concourse D extension that will create 17 new gates, and further American’s dominance at the airport. American already accounts for more than 60% of all passenger traffic at the airport, with roughly 400 daily departures during peak periods.
The build-out will allow American to move larger jets into the 17 new gates being installed in the concourse, replacing spaces American had previously reserved for smaller, regional jets headed to the Caribbean.
That means no more bus boarding for those flying American at those gates—every gate will now have its own adjoining boarding space. It also means more high-volume international routes, like new service to Milan, Italy, and Bimini, Bahamas, along with expanded capacity to 155 destinations across 45 countries.
The project also includes a new Flagship Lounge, expanded Admirals Club facilities, and future direct third-floor access to the MIA customs hall.
While ground is being broke next year, American did not unveil when it expects the terminal to open to guests.
