Cayman Airways Limited celebrated its first flight to Barbados on Oct. 18.

The inaugural flight marked the beginning of weekly direct flights between Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman and Grantly Adams International Airport in Barbados. Initially, flights will be on Wednesdays only, and more will be added in a few weeks.

“The introduction of the Barbados route will offer cost-effective flights that will significantly enhance the convenience of travel overall to, and within, the Caribbean,” said Cayman Islands Minister of Tourism and Ports Kenneth Bryan. “The financial commitment from BTMI to back this Cayman Airways service has been crucial in making a Barbados route a reality. It underscores the long-standing relationship and spirit of cooperation that exists between the governments of the Cayman Islands and Barbados.”

Earlier this year, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) proposed that Cayman Airways offer year-round, twice-weekly flights between Cayman Island and Barbados. The two entities then negotiated a plan for service and scheduled the launch to coincide with this week’s 2023 Barbados Food and Rum Festival.

The new flight availability will not only promote inter-Caribbean travel but travel to and from the United States, as well, according to Cayman Airways Chairman Dr. John-Paul Clarke.

“In addition to providing nonstop service to and from Barbados, this new service has been timed to provide convenient connections to the Eastern Caribbean and Europe via the many carriers that fly to the Grantley Adams International Airport,” Clarke said. “This new service also provides convenient connections via Grand Cayman to Los Angeles, effectively linking the West Coast of the United States with the Eastern Caribbean.”

Starting Nov. 5, Cayman Airways will roll out its winter schedule, and flights to and from Barbados will run as follows:

  • Tuesdays: KX804 departs Grand Cayman at 5:10 p.m. and arrives in Barbados at 9:35pm
  • Wednesdays: KX805 departs Barbados at 11:45 a.m. and arrives in Grand Cayman at 2:25 p.m.
  • Thursdays: KX802 departs Grand Cayman at 4:30 p.m. and arrives in Barbados at 8:55 p.m.
  • Fridays: KX803 departs Barbados at 9:20 a.m. and arrives in Grand Cayman at 12 p.m.

Cayman Airways’ existing regular direct flight destinations include Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica; Havana, Cuba; La Ceiba, Honduras; Miami and Tampa, Florida; and New York. The airline also offers seasonal service to Los Angeles and Denver.
