Flight Cancellations Pile Up as Winter Storm Cora Disrupts Travel in North Texas

A major winter storm, dubbed Winter Storm Cora, is wreaking havoc on travel in North Texas on Thursday, as cancellations pile up at airports amid more than six inches of projected snow.

According to FlightAware, as of 7:30 a.m. local time, 519 departures have been canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), 46% of its entire Thursday schedule, and another 107 have been canceled at Dallas Love Field (DAL), 43% of its schedule.

Cancellations are increasing at some other Texas airports—including Austin Bergstrom (AUS) and William Hobby (HOU) in Houston—but the Dallas area is by far the hardest hit as of now.

And while Texas is hardest hit as of Thursday, the storm is now expected to continue to bring snow and ice to Texas through Virginia through Friday night, covering some major travel hubs, and likely causing issues at airports in the area through the weekend.

Airline Waivers

Airlines are being generous with their flight change waivers this week as the storm continues to cause issues not just in Texas, but elsewhere, including the Carolinas, Georgia, and more.

  • American Airlines: American’s waiver includes more than 30 airports for travel from Jan. 8 through Jan. 12, including Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Atlanta-Hartsfield (ATL), and Nashville International (BNA). The waiver allows for new travel to be booked through Jan. 15 without penalty. Changes must be made by Jan. 12.
  • Delta: Delta has a waiver out for Texas airports and others in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. That waiver runs through Jan. 9 and allows for new travel through Jan. 15. Delta has a separate waiver for travel through airports in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia. That waiver runs from Jan. 10 through Jan. 11 and also allows for new travel through Jan. 15.
  • JetBlue: JetBlue has a waiver out for nine airports, including Atlanta-Hartsfield (ATL), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), and Ronald Reagan Washington (DCA) in D.C. That waiver runs through Jan. 11 and allows for new travel through Jan. 18 without penalty or fare differences.
  • United Airlines: United Airlines has a waiver out for travel on Jan. 10 and Jan. 11 through 15 airports, including Atlanta-Hartsfield (ATL), Nashville International (BNA), and Charlotte (CLT). New travel can be scheduled through Jan. 17 without change fees or fare differences.
