Dublin Airport (DUB) said on Sunday that all roads surrounding the airport are now clear, including the M50, after the Garda removed all remaining blockades overnight.
The roads had been blocked as part of ongoing public protests over the rising price of oil. The disruption escalated to the point that passengers flying out of Dublin were seen walking their bags along the M50 last week as traffic came to a standstill, leaving them unable to reach the terminal by vehicle.
Officials stated on Monday that most of the major blockades that paralyzed the country, including routes to Dublin Airport and the city center, have been cleared, though the potential for their return remains.
“All roads leading to and from Dublin Airport are currently clear following the overnight removal of remaining blockades on the M50,” the airport said in a statement on Sunday. “However, the potential for further disruption remains. Passengers traveling to the airport today are advised to remain vigilant and to continue consulting live traffic apps when planning their journey.”
The protests were specifically sparked by the rise in oil prices as diesel in Ireland hit above €2.30 per liter, an all-time high. The Irish government held an emergency meeting on Sunday to react to the situation and announced a package aimed at lowering costs. The measures include fuel tax cuts, a pause on a planned carbon tax, and targeted fuel subsidies for the farming and fisheries sectors.
