Alphabet-owned autonomous vehicle leader Waymo has officially expanded its driverless ride-hailing service to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), marking another major milestone for autonomous transit in a top-tier U.S. tourism and convention market.
For travel advisors fielding client questions about getting from the terminal to the Las Vegas Strip, here is what you need to know about the rollout.
For those unfamiliar, Waymo operates a commercial fleet of fully autonomous, driverless electric vehicles (often referred to as robotaxis) that users can hail via a Waymo smartphone app much like Uber or Lyft, except there is no human driver behind the wheel.
The company already operates across major U.S. cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and to and from some big airports including Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
For the Vegas expansion, there will be designated autonomous vehicle zones on the ground level of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 where travelers can pick up their ride.
Rides connect the airport to anywhere within Waymo’s current 24-square-mile Las Vegas service footprint, which includes major resort corridors and downtown. Both Waymo and airport officials said this week that the footprint will continue to scale over time.
