Maui Hotel Update: What’s Open and What’s Not Ahead of Oct. 8 Reopening
by Daniel McCarthy and Briana Bonfiglio /Hawaii tourism has been slowly recovering since the August wildfires tore through West Maui and the town of Lahaina.
In September, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green announced that West Maui would reopen to visitors on Oct. 8, two months after those fires. Though Lahaina will remain closed, all travel restrictions to West Maui will end, Green said.
“Beginning Oct. 8, all travel restrictions will end, and West Maui will be open to visitors again, so people from Hawaii and around the world can resume travel to this special place and help it begin to recover economically,” Green said. “This difficult decision is meant to bring hope for recovery to the families and businesses on Maui that have been so deeply affected in every way by the disaster.”
Ahead of the reopening next week, here’s an update on what hotels are open, and what aren’t, as travelers get set to come back to Maui:
Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort & Hana-Maui Resort
The Andaz Maui Wailea and Hana-Maui Resort, both owned by Hyatt Hotels, continue to welcome guests and have not been impacted. Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, however, will reopen as part of Phase 3 of the governor’s phased approach to reopening West Maui. Authorities have not yet shared a timeline for when phases 2 and 3 will begin.
“Our priority is to continue to extend care for our colleagues and the Maui community,” a Hyatt spokesperson told TMR. “Hyatt hotels remain focused on providing support to our colleagues and community in Maui and are continuing to work closely with local and federal authorities on supporting their response and relief efforts.”
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa will continue to waive cancelation fees in the coming weeks. Guests with questions about their bookings can contact the Hyatt Global Care Center at 1-800-233-1234

The property tells all owners and guests to abide by the Hawaii Governor’s office, which continues “to strongly discourage nonessential travel to West Maui, currently through October 7.”
Montage Kapalua Bay
Montage Kapalua Bay looks forward to welcoming back guests to the resort on October 8, 2023. The property told TMR it is pleased to support recovery efforts for the island of Maui and encourages its guests to visit the property that boasts residential-style accommodation for families.
