A decade since its launch, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) continues to set records for PreCheck, its known traveler program.

The TSA today announced that its TSA PreCheck application program has surpassed 15 million active members, officially setting a new record for membership.

At the same time, TSA announced that more than 19,200 individuals applied for membership on Feb. 21, 2023, which breaks the record for any single day in the program’s history.

“TSA PreCheck is one of the most innovative, efficient, and effective risk-based security solutions in the agency’s 21-year history,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

“Today, TSA PreCheck represents a best-in-class model of a successful trusted traveler system, providing the shared benefits of shorter wait times of under 10 minutes, greater checkpoint efficiency, and improved security. We are proud of this program and appreciate that so many passengers recognize its value to them personally and to the transportation system.”

PreCheck gives travelers access to expedited security lanes at U.S. airport checkpoints, which allows them to avoid removing shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, food, laptops, and light jackets. Applications have to be made in person. It costs $85 for a five-year membership. Renewals may be completed online for $70 for an additional 5 years.

According to the TSA, more than 90% of passengers using PreCheck wait less than five minutes on a typical day at airport security.

PreCheck is one of two major programs that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employs to speed up the process for travelers. The other is Global Entry, which allows expedited clearance upon arrival into the United States. Those that apply for Global Entry are also eligible to travel through the TSA PreCheck lanes. Global Entry costs $100 to apply, and the membership lasts for five years.
