Puerto Rico Asks Travelers to Conserve Water, Check with Hotels Before Arrival Amid Droughts

Puerto Rico is facing severe, historic droughts in several parts of the island, forcing a water rationing system that’s been in place for several weeks.

In July, San Juan had the driest month on record in 120 years and its second hottest, AP News reported. Nearly 25% of Puerto Rico is in a severe drought, and another 36% is in a moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The country began a 48-hour on/48-hour off rationing schedule on Aug. 7 to combat the water shortage, with municipalities alternating when their water is turned on and off every two days.

Still, hotels are operational, and tourists are welcome, though they should be aware and mindful of the situation.

Most hotels have backup plans to ensure continuous operation of water. However, tourism officials are asking travelers to conserve water as best they can. Visitors should also check with their individual hotels and tour operators before arrival, as water protocols and guidelines may be different at each property.

“Hotels and other tourism partners have their own contingency measures in place, while Discover Puerto Rico works closely with government, industry partners, travel planners, and tour operators to share timely information and help travelers plan with confidence,” a Discover Puerto Rico spokesperson told Travel Market Report.

As part of its “Keep the Island Singing” campaign, Discover Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory’s tourism marketing arm, urges travelers to adhere to the following water conservation guidelines during their stays:

  • Take a shower instead of taking a bath. Keep it a little shorter.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, washing your face, or shaving.
  • If you hear a drip or a running toilet, tell the front desk or your host.
  • Reuse towels and linens when the property offers that choice.
  • Keep pool and beach rinses brief.
  • At restaurants, take only the water you plan to drink.

The organization also emphasizes that travelers should not cancel their trips – only adjust them if necessary – because tourism is more important during harsh times in the country, not less.

“Visitors have always played an important role in Puerto Rico’s story, and with that comes a shared responsibility to care for the Island we all love,” said Jorge L. Pérez, CEO of Discover Puerto Rico. “Keep the Island Singing ensures that travelers have clear information and practical ways to conserve water and serve as thoughtful stewards of our natural resources while enjoying all that Puerto Rico has to offer.”

In addition, Discover Puerto Rico has released communication guidelines for travel industry partners to use when speaking to travelers about what’s going on. The main message remains to contact hotels and tour operators prior to travel and to conserve water while in the country.
