Hurricane Maria Causes More Caribbean Cruise Itinerary Changes

by Daniel McCarthy  September 19, 2017
Hurricane Maria Causes More Caribbean Cruise Itinerary Changes

Approaching Carnival Glory anchored off Belize City

With Hurricane Maria set to make landfall in Puerto Rico today, Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line have both announced modified itineraries to keep things moving in the Caribbean.

Carnival has changed current itineraries of three of its ships—Glory, Fascination, and Magic.

Glory will no longer sail to scheduled stops Half Moon Cay, St. Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turk. Instead, will make calls at Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.

Fascination will now head to Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, and St. Kitts.

And Magic will now sail to Amber Cove, Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean has changed the itineraries of Adventure of the Seas and Allure of the Seas specifically because of Maria.

Adventure will overnight in Aruba and call on Bonaire while Allure will now visit Falmouth instead of St. Kitts on Sept. 21. The next update for Royal Caribbean is expected at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Norwegian Cruise Line has yet to announce any updates to its current sailings, though on a post on its Facebook page it said “the company is closely watching Hurricanes Maria and Jose in the Atlantic.” Both Dawn and Breakaway are sailing Bermuda itineraries and are both on schedule.

Any updates to Norwegian’s itineraries will be first posted on its website.

Windstar Cruises has also announced some changes because of Maria. All of its November sailings will no longer stop in St. Maarten and will now instead call at Bridgetown, Barbados.

Maria comes one week after Hurricane Irma devastated parts of the region. Certain islands hit hard by Irma, like St. Thomas and St. John, appear to be in Maria’s path.

Hurricane warnings were posted for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat and tropical storm warnings were issued for Antigua and Barbuda, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Martinique and Anguilla.
