Ibiza Plans to Limit Cruise Ship Calls

The tourist hotspot of Ibiza, Spain is putting cruise limits into place to help combat overtourism. Under the new policy, as announced by the Independent, will allow no more than two cruises to be docked at the same time.

The Council of Mayors has said it will speak with the Balearic Port Authority to ensure that the schedule conforms with the new policy.

Ibiza is not the first Spanish destination to put limits into place. Last year, Mallorca capped cruise visits to three per day, and Barcelona closed its city center cruise port, effectively limiting cruise ship calls to seven per day, last fall.

According to a report from Ibiza Preservation, in 2023 a total of 548,969 cruise passengers arrived in Ibiza, which represents an 86% increase from 2022. The figure also sets a new record, exceeding the previous record set in 2019 by 39%.
