Manhattan’s Omni Berkshire Place Closure Latest COVID-19 Hotel Casualty

The Omni Berkshire Place hotel in midtown Manhattan will permanently close as a result of the COVID-19, according to the company’s website.
Omni Hotels, owned by billionaire Robert Rowling’s TRT Holdings, took over the hotel in 1996, a year after undergoing a $70 million restoration.
The 399-room property was built in 1926 by the same architecture firm that designed nearby Grand Central Terminal, and was where Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein collaborated on their first musical “Oklahoma!” in 1942.
The news come a month after The Times Square Edition announced it would be closing due to lost business from lockdowns and travel restrictions, just a year after opening.
The pandemic that hit New York’s hotel industry harder than any other U.S. lodging market. According to analysts cited by the Wall Street Journal, as many as 25,000 rooms, or 20% of New York’s total, might not reopen.
