United Airlines Ups “Unaccompanied Minor” Fees
United played Grinch over Christmas, quietly extending its definition of “minor” in the phrase “unaccompanied minor” from 12 to 15.
Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 15 now will have to pay the $150 fee on all United Airlines flights, effective December 15. In return—or likely, from their perspective, even worse, they will be chaperoned to their seats and to their guardians upon arrival by a flight attendant.
United now will have the strictest policy regarding children flying alone. Delta and American Airlines charge $150 for unaccompanied minors up to the age of 14, and Southwest Airlines requires the service only up to age 11, for a $50 fee.
