AmaWaterways is taking its land programs a step further, introducing a new five-night, six-day Machu Picchu land extension for the 2027 river cruise season.
AmaWaterways announced Monday that the Peru journey will launch in April 2027 as a post-cruise extension for select sailings on its Magic of Colombia itinerary along the Magdalena River. Beginning in 2028, the company plans to make the extension available on every post-cruise Magic of Colombia sailing.
After disembarking in Cartagena, Colombia, guests will fly to Lima, Peru, with inter-country airfare between the two destinations included in the package. The itinerary takes travelers from the coastal neighborhoods of Miraflores and Barranco in Lima into the Andes, covering Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo, the Maras salt pans, and the agricultural terraces of Moray, before culminating in a privately guided tour of Machu Picchu.
Travelers will also have choice in how they arrive at the ancient citadel, with transit offered aboard either first-class Inca Rail or the legendary Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train. AmaWaterways is also offering guests a choice between two distinct hotel tiers:
- The Boutique Option: Features stays at luxury properties including The Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center, Tambo del Inka (A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in the Sacred Valley), and Palacio del Inka (A Luxury Collection Hotel in Cusco).
- The Iconic Option: Features high-end Belmond accommodations, including Miraflores Park in Lima and Monasterio in Cusco.
“Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic places to visit on earth. It is so exciting to add this highly curated experience to our offerings, and it reflects how AmaWaterways is evolving its approach to luxury river cruising,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “We have always believed the best and most memorable experiences are those that connect our guests deeply to the places they visit. With our first-ever Peruvian journey, we are bringing together exceptional hotels, food, and service in an unforgettable location.”
Powell added that the expansion represents a broader strategy for the line off the water: “Machu Picchu is an iconic destination, but there is also exciting opportunity in everything around it: the way you arrive, where you stay, what you discover, who you meet, and ultimately how the experience makes you feel.”
