European Union Delays Biometric Capture Entry Requirements

The European Union is delaying the launch of its new entry/exit system (EES) that will require short-stay travelers to have their biometric data recorded in order to enter EU member countries. The system was scheduled to come online Nov. 10, 2024.

According to Euro News, three countries – Germany, France, and the Netherlands – will not be ready in time.

The announcement was made by Ylva Johansson, the Commissioner for Home Affairs. Instead, there will be a “phased approach” to the program, with more details being released this month.

The Exit/Entry System requires that visitors from non-EU countries have their biometric data captured and stored, replacing the need for the physical stamping of passports. The EES lays the groundwork for the launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will require all non-European, including travelers from the U.S., Canada, and U.K. to apply for, and pay for, a visa before entering any of the EU member nations.
